The Barton Read & Spell System
Corona College is very pleased to be affiliated with the Barton Reading & Spelling System. This is a one-on-one tutoring system that will greatly improve the spelling, reading, and writing skills of those students who struggle due to dyslexia or other learning disabilities. It can be used with adults who are having reading difficulties as well as with school-aged students who need more one-on-one than can be provided in their regular school system.
The Barton System is divided into ten levels and students progress through the levels at their own speed. It is NEVER too late to improve your reading, spelling, and writing skills. Most students with dyslexia or other learning disabilities do not get the right type of help in school and, without the right type of reading instruction, most adults with dyslexia – no matter how smart they are – can’t read or write above the third-grade level. Of course, because of this, their job options and earning power are limited, their success in college is rare, and they drop out of high school at a much higher rate than the national average. People with literacy problems in Canada have two-thirds the income of other Canadians, are twice as likely to be unemployed, and many times more likely to receive some form of social assistance. Jobs available to lower-literacy adults tend to be the lowest paid and the most insecure.
The Barton Reading & Spelling System was created specifically for the types of people discussed above. It is designed so that students progress at their own rate with no pressure to “keep up with the rest of the class”. This is why there is such a high success rate for students who enroll in the Barton Spelling & Reading System. Research shows that 95 percent of reading failure is preventable – by using appropriate reading systems and well-trained teachers.
The Barton System is an Orton-Gillingham influenced program supported by independent research. Dr. Orton and Anna Gillingham developed a unique method and sequence to significantly improve the reading and spelling skills of children and adults with dyslexia way back in the 1930’s. The Barton Reading & Spelling System is an Orton-Gillingham influenced approach to reading and spelling. All the latest scientific, independent, replicated reading research supports the Orton-Gillingham sequence and methodology as “best practices” when teaching reading to students with dyslexia.
Susan Barton, an internationally recognized expert in dyslexia, developed the Barton Reading and Spelling System. The system was released in June of 1999. Susan founded Bright Solutions for Dyslexia, the publisher of the Barton Reading & Spelling System. People with dyslexia or other learning disabilities can significantly improve their reading and spelling skills IF they are taught differently than is done in most public schools. They need to be taught using an Orton-Gillingham based system. This is why Susan developed the Barton Reading & Spelling System. The Barton system is easy to learn and contains a great deal of support for both the learner and the facilitator.
Independent data and research for the Barton system can be seen by logging on to www.bartonreading.com. Since May 1, 2003, the California Board of Education has used the Barton Reading & Spelling System. Many parents have even purchased the system themselves in order to help their own children.
Corona College is authorized to offer the Barton Reading and Spelling System here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Full time instruction is available at our campus located at 32 Queensway Business Park in Grand Falls-Windsor. We are also pleased to offer a tutoring program for school-aged students in our area. We have facilitators available after school hours for students who need the Barton System to help them with their reading difficulties.
The Barton System has provided a second chance for many adults who believed that they would never be able to read and write. Call to find out if it can help you. Independent data and research for the Barton system can be seen by logging on to www.bartonreading.com.
